What is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine uses medicinal plants
in the treatment and prevention of disease. Medical Herbalists believe that medicines made from the whole plant are safer and more balanced than concentrated drug extracts. For example the drug frusemide is a powerful diuretic, promoting the flow of urine, but it also depletes the body of potassium. Dandelion leaf is also an effective diuretic but it is rich in potassium and doesn’t deplete the body of potassium.
My approach is holistic, looking at the underlying causes of disease, not just the symptoms. Herbal medicines are prescribed to restore homeostasis (balance within the body) and assist your animal’s ability to heal itself.

What are herbal medicines?
The herbal medicines that I use come from plants that have been harvested in a sustainable manner and grown using organic methods where possible. Some of these medicines are made by myself and come from plants that I have grown or collected. Herbal medicines are dispensed as liquid tinctures, dried mixes, teas, powders, tablets, lotions, creams, ointments and gels. They need to be stored away from direct light and heat and out of reach of children.
Which animals can benefit from Homeopathy?
Homoeopathy can help animals that are suffering from a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses including behavioural problems, allergies, skin & feather conditions, digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, liver disease, kidney disease, bladder problems, respiratory diseases, heart conditions, lameness, joint disease, hoof problems, head shaking, convulsions, reproductive problems, infections, disease outbreaks and many other conditions.
What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a form of holistic medicine based on the Law of Similars, let like be cured with like. It takes a broader view of disease, looking at the underlying cause and individual expression of the disease, not just the presenting symptoms. The homeopathic medicine stimulates the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It is prescribed according to your animal’s unique physical and mental symptom picture. Two animals with the same disease may receive different homeopathic medicines because each animal has an individual response to illness. Herd animals will often be approached as a whole group. I may spend extra time after the consultation analysing the case before a homeopathic remedy is prescribed.
What are homoeopathic medicines?
Homeopathic medicines come from plant, mineral and animal sources. A special process of serial dilution and potentisation produces a homeopathic medicine. They may be dispensed as pills, drops, tablets, granules, liquids or creams. The frequency of dosage depends on your animals’ needs and the nature of the illness. They should be given in a clean mouth between meals. Try to avoid touching the medicines directly with your hands as chemicals and essential oils can affect the medicines. Please store the medicines away from bright light, extremes of temperature, strong smelling substances, including essential oils and not on top of the microwave.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that has been used successfully in animals for approximately 4,000 years. Traditional Chinese Medicine views diseases as an imbalance within the animals and its internal and external movement. Health is restored by returning the body to equilibrium. It involves the stimulation of specific points in the body (acupoints) that have the ability to alter biochemical and physiological states to produces a therapeutic effect. Methods of stimulation include the use of fine sterile needles, moxibustion (heating the point), gold bead implants, injection, laser and electrical stimulation. Acupoints are chosen on the basis of the consultation, examination, western and Traditional Chinese diagnosis.
Which animals can benefit from acupuncture?
Acupuncture is most commonly used for painful conditions but it can be used to maintain health and for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions including;
lameness, arthritis, back pain, hoof conditions, nerve damage, muscle or tendon injury, post-surgical recovery, asthma, incontinence, digestive problems, liver disease, vomiting, diarrhea, epilepsy, heart conditions, hormonal problems, kidney disease, respiratory conditions and immune dysfunction.

What happens during an acupuncture treatment?
The insertion of a fine acupuncture needle is a very different sensation from that of an injection. Occasionally there may be a brief sensitivity but once the needles are in place most animals relax and many fall asleep during the treatment. An acupuncture treatment may last from a few seconds to half an hour depending on the nature of the condition and the method used. The frequency of treatment also depends on your animal’s needs but animals are often treated once every 1-2 weeks for 4-6 treatments. The treatment interval may need to be more or less frequent according to individual needs. Alternatively hemp hemp oil for pets is a great choice.

How Do Herbs Work?
Herbs may be used as foods or medicines to nourish and nurture the body. Medicinal plants are used to strengthen the body by improving the digestion and absorption of food and the supply of oxygen and other nutrients to the body’s tissues. They also improve the body’s ability to eliminate waste products from the body through the gut, urinary tract, lungs and skin. Herbal medicines help to restore homeostasis (equilibrium) within the body.
Scientific research has identified many of the chemical constituents of medicinal plants. This knowledge helps Medical Herbalists to understand the mechanisms behind some of the healing properties of plants and to be aware of potential interactions between medicinal plants and drugs. Medicinal Herbalists know that the complex constituents of the whole plant act together in synergy to produce safe and balanced therapeutic effects. Herbal medicines support the body’s own self-healing process and facilitate a return to health and vitality.
